Week 2 - Football |
Being a Saturday Wahid (my Swahili teacher) said we should meet a 4pm and go out somewhere. We went to the Mao "stadium" in Zanzibar Town where Wahid paid TS500 ($0.50) each for us to get in. We watched a Zanzibar premiership football game between Jangombe Taifa and Kikwajuni. It was a good game with Kikwajuni holding a 1-0 lead for most of the first half. Jangombe were by far the better supported, and much to the crowd's delight eventually equalised. I think the idea of the Swahili lesson was to be amongst Swahili people and learn some new words although Wahid did decline to translate some of the things people were shouting at the ref..
Had a coconut at half-time. A really enjoyable afternoon.
