  Whirling Dervishes Misc News

I have recently started using one of those USB flash memory key-ring thingies, and it has changed my life. We get on quite well with the owner of the little computer shop below our apartment and he does not seem to mind us typing away for hours on one of his computers or using his printer (I did by him GBP10 worth of paper the other day). With this new electronic "disk drive" I can transfer my files easily onto my key-ring then walk into any internet café and do the on-line work as efficiently (cheaply) as possible. It works the other way too. When I receive long emails, or news articles I want to consider using in class, I can copy them over to read through later.

Unfortunately the European Film Festival, which was due for this week was cancelled at the last moment; I knew they should have let me help out. I made do with a video of the Sweeny's Greatest Car Chases from the British Council instead. Actually a few friends have offered to send me some DVDs so I might even be able to have a little festival of my own before long.

On Sunday evening we had another power-cut. It was not so bad during the day, but sat in the dark, listening to the battery powered radio was a little boring. It reminded me of my teenage years when the deteriorating relationship between the British Government and the trade unions reduced British industry to a three day working week. There were frequent power-cuts and we would sit in one room, trying to do our homework by candle-light and listening to the BBC operating a single station. Mango FM was not quite the same! We went over to Kamal's watched music videos, mostly of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, and enjoyed some date flavoured 7-Up. We sailed home.
