Gay Shisha Futuur: Ramadan 20 Wed 3 Nov 2004

Wed 3 Nov

All the volunteers, past and present, are invited to the home of one of the "founding fathers" of the volunteer programme. He lives across the Nile in Khartoum North, a little way out, in a road of posh houses. His place has two driveways and palm trees along the front perimeter wall; a little conspicuous being the only ones for miles around. He is very welcoming and friendly. We sit in his garden making polite conversation and enjoying the end of the day's sunshine. Tables with table cloths are set out around us. There is a tray of glasses, sparkling-clean and matching. A serving table is laid. Sensationally we are given "private plates" and cutlery. What! No sitting on the same mat dipping our licked fingers in the same serving bowls? How uncultured.
