  Displaced People Left Behind

As we are walking back to the bus stop we pass a crumbling wall, one-time someone's home, with the slogan "New Sudan" painted on it. This must have been meant as ironic from the outset. No one can believe that this promise, this glimmer of optimism, has arrived.

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed just three months ago (January 2005) means that people like Amal and her neighbours can return home; back to their rural areas, back to their roots.

This would mean turning their backs on the chance of work, on health care, and access to cheap goods.

It would mean making a fresh start; the war has left them nothing. And it will take more than bus fare. They will also need land safe from landmines, a reliable water supply, seeds and livestock. But at least they could live with dignity, in permanent houses. At least they could grow their own food. They are ready to work hard; they just need a chance
