Girl Friends Ceramics in Sudan Thu 10 Mar 2005

Thu 10 Mar

I accompany Margie to college as she wants me to meet the ceramicist in the technology centre next door. He has a very interesting piece inspired by the cow-horn head-dressed dancers of the Nuba Mountains. It's essentially a tall straight-sided pot with a frieze of these dancers, some drawn, and some in relief with a lovely smoky, blue-grey glaze. At the top there are two openings making it look a bit like an internal organ with severed pipes. "These are for function," he explains, "so it can be used as a vase".

Later, in Khartoum, I go along to an exhibition of student's work at the Faculty of Arts, University of Sudan. It is good to see so many ceramics but most are house-ware with little originality in form, or glaze. I am more impressed with the sculpting and graphic design. Sudan has a lot of talent waiting in the wings - watch-out world..
