Nile Swim Dawn Run Wed 23 Feb 2005

Wed 23 Feb

I went for another run this morning. Only my third, but I think I'm getting the hang of it now. Timings are critical though: At 6:30am it's as dark as a city every gets. By 6:50am, when I set off, the sky is lightening and there's a reasonable degree of confidence that the sun will come again today (just about the only thing you can rely on here). It takes me 15 minutes to get down to the road that runs along the Nile and then another five minutes to the water's edge. I'm thinking that's too much slog just to get to the pretty bit. From there I run along the shore; downstream.

This morning there is a white heron - looking so elegant and not particularly disturbed by my panting. The sun rises. It is very round, well defined, even pretty but within five minutes it is white and too bright to look at; time to go back. Fortunately there is shade from the buildings for most of the return journey. The round trip takes 57 minutes.
