At El Obied International airport there is some mix-up and confusion. By 4:30pm an out-of-service plane drops in for fuel on its way home from Juba. The pilot is Fleur, a young, capable southern African. We've not seen another plane all afternoon so she agrees to take us; after all, it seems better to go with the bird in the hand than wait for two still in the bush. It's not the usual Beechcraft and takes twice as long. Just before landing Fleur hears that our intended aircraft has just left El Obied; never mind, it's too late now.

Leaving the domestic terminal in Khartoum I realise my bag is heavy and bulky and the thought of journeying home by public transport is not endearing. Wishing for an easier option I tell the guy on the airport gate that I want Omdurman and luckily it's not long before someone's happy to give me a lift.
