El Obied Colonial Outpost Sun 9 Jan 2005

Jama Kordofan campus
Jama Kordofan campus
The Faculty was built, I would think, during colonial times. It's in its own campus with single-storey stone-built classrooms and offices, and a sprinkling of bougainvillea bushes and shady trees. It was recently painted and is looking very nice.

In the evening I wander along to the British Cultural Centre (what's left of the library after the British Council pulled out). I join for an annual subscription equiv US$3 and immediately re-negotiate the two book limit up to four books. Salah's discussion group is quite fun. Of course I am centre of attention - they rarely get a native speaker.

They've been signing peace agreements again today. Everyone seems to be extremely pleased, but no one seems to have a clue as to what it means in practice or how it will work.

Mon 10 Jan

After first class I go to see Sidig again. He's the registrar for the Accounting, Business and Information Technology faculty. We discuss what else I can do while I'm here. I agree to do a lecture to the IT students on "Software Engineering in the real world". Mmmh, have to see what I can remember.

In the evening I meet with Salah. He wants an introduction to the internet and email.
