Christmas Tea Party Thu 23 Dec 2004

Thu 23 Dec

This is definitely my last day of teaching before Christmas and possibly the semester. In place of teaching the 2nd year I am invited to an end-of-term tea party (I think intended as a leaving gesture for Neil, but they forgot to tell him). I'm slightly embarrassed to discover it's just for staff; the 2nd year students are abandoned.

We sip Lipton's Tea with cream, and enjoy olive bread mini pizzas and gratuitous cake. We each have to do a little speech and a "forfeit" (the Sudanese are so fond of this sort of thing, and like the Irish, everybody seems to have their set party piece). I have to describe my "home town" which I cheekily interpret as the town of my birth - a town just 50km shy of Uganda's border with Sudan. Someone else has to tell us (rather well rehearsed, I think) "what is on your mind".
