Thu 23 Dec This is definitely my last day of teaching before Christmas and possibly the semester. In place of teaching the 2nd year I am invited to an end-of-term tea party (I think intended as a leaving gesture for Neil, but they forgot to tell him). I'm slightly embarrassed to discover it's just for staff; the 2nd year students are abandoned. We sip Lipton's Tea with cream, and enjoy olive bread mini pizzas and gratuitous cake. We each have to do a little speech and a "forfeit" (the Sudanese are so fond of this sort of thing, and like the Irish, everybody seems to have their set party piece). I have to describe my "home town" which I cheekily interpret as the town of my birth - a town just 50km shy of Uganda's border with Sudan. Someone else has to tell us (rather well rehearsed, I think) "what is on your mind".
