Egypt - Enough?

Although the objective had been Cape to Cairo I felt a little uneasy having come all the way from the "bottom" of Africa and not quite reaching the "top" so in the afternoon I took the express train up to Alexandria. The journey takes just over two hours and follows the Nile towards the Mediterranean and Africa's north coast.

The Mediterranean Sea, Alexandria, Egypt Being the winter solstice and even further north there wasn't much afternoon left once I arrived. I walked from the train station along an Egyptian street market (a world away from the tourist souk in Aswan) and down to the harbour. Tragically, the sun was obscured by clouds and on its way down. Still it was good to see the sea, watch the waves, and feel the breeze. I walked along the promenade for about 5km by which time it was quite dark and then got the train back to Cairo. A lot more familiar with my surroundings this time I got the metro back to the hotel.

This journey of the past 100 days has been important to me. I've always wanted to do something like it and I'm delighted I now have.
