Week 4 - Misc

Mon 16th lunchtime I went looking for bread. "You’ll only get it in the market" I was told. Now there’s a challenge. Half an hour later I had covered most of Stone Town to no avail so gave up and headed for the market. Apparently bread is only sold in the early mornings and evenings, only mad dogs and Englishmen look for it in the middle of the day.

As I was there I thought I would try again to choose some fabric for a shirt. The "ketenge" cloth comes in 4m lengths for about TS4000 (US$4). This is sufficient for two short sleeve shirts with pockets. The deal I had already discussed with a tailor in my street was that I would supply the fabric and he could give me one and sell the other. Mission initiated – shirt will be ready Saturday at 4pm (I hope that doesn’t clash with football?).

In the evening went for a glass of wine with Charlotte – needed to make sure I would leave work at a reasonable time – nice to have wine instead of beer.

Tues 17th
Got given a SIM today for the local Zantel network… about time ZIFF’s information officer was contactable and more to the point I can now call anyone else in the organisation more easily.

Wed 18th
Went to Passing Show for lunch – good idea to get out. Took the camera and photographed the Customs House again – the tide was out so I could get down on the beach in front of it. Photographed some fish for sale too.
