Week 2 - Pascal

<<prev next>>

Popped out of the office for sunset one afternoon. It looked like it was going to be a good one, so I left the Old Fort and crossed the gardens to Blues (an expensive bar on the waterfront). There I met Pascal - the most interesting Belgian I've ever met. I guess you might say he's "gone native". He claims to own nothing of worth, he catches the Daladala to/from work... and lives in a "tree house"... He had once studied art, and now talks glowingly about contemporary East African artists; he "minds" Emerson's art shop where pieces sell for $400. Since I first met him last year he has became principal of an international school here and is presently (ambitiously) setting the syllabus for 200 hrs of teaching.

The sunset was fantastic. It's the sort where a perfect orange disc touches the sea and then due to refraction appears to be in front of the distant horizon (of course I hadn't got my camera with me).
