  Koran Calling Wrestling with Hans

Tom and Eleanor came in with a khawaja they found in the market. He asked to use the loo and then hung around to enjoy a glass of water and a grapefruit (we had run out of gas so could not offer much more!) He is called Hans and works at the Dutch embassy. He has been here about a month.

We were planning to go and see some wrestling in the afternoon so we suggested Hans came along too. This worked out trumps as he had a vehicle and it turned out to be quite a long way. At the wrestling ground we were whisked passed the ticket stall and led straight to a VIP area with plastic garden chairs and no scabby kids sat on the ground in front of us. This was a little embarrassing and quite unexpected. It had all been arranged by one of our third-year students and he was clearly keen to make our visit as comfortable as possible.

The wrestlers had bulging upper bodies and funny, spindly legs which meant they walked with a silly swagger. They covered themselves in dust, as if it were war paint, for some reason I could not discern. The wrestling was good fun, and entertaining although we could have done with a little more explanation at times.
