  Birthday Week Jackie Brown

So Katy and I missed the weekly movie at the French Cultural Centre last night. Instead she has taken home the office video projector and tonight we are invited for supper and movies.

I hate being late, especially as a specific time has been set for screenings, but in fact a succession of good connections means it only takes me an hour and a quarter to cross town; in any case the preparations are still going strong and I haven't missed anything.

Paul, who we met off the plane only a few weeks ago, is preparing a salad, Katy has everything in the kitchen under control and Daniel's wandering around in a "kikoi" (wrap-around skirt for men) from Nairobi checking everyone's happy. Tom, Cleo and other friends have already arrived.

The food is delicious and the meal leisurely. By the time we're ready to see a film some guests are ready to leave. Tom and I decide to stay over. So it seems, only now, do we choose the film from a selection of DVDs. For some reason Daniel doesn't want any "girlie" films (which I take to mean "romantic") so we settle for Tarantino's "Jackie Brown". One of my favourite directors and a film I've only seen once before; when it first came out.

The furniture is rearranged so most of us have a bed, or at least a mattress, and the equipment is hooked up to shine on to the white wall at the end of the room.

The film finishes just before 1am and I am glad I anticipated staying over. Tom and I sleep in the same room leaving the garden door open, allowing a refreshing breeze to pass through all night long. I sleep really well.
