Ramadan Futuur Kamal Will Fix It Fri 29 Oct 2004

Fri 29 Oct

Permit me to introduce Kamal. He is a Sudanese guy who has over the years become good friends with some of the volunteers. Just like the apartment sees volunteers come and go so does Kamal. I arrive and am immediately told there is a nice chap called Kamal who comes around. If you want any help with anything he will get it sorted, and so on. It is always difficult to form your own impression, make your own relationship, when this is the starting point, but I find Kamal quiet, unassuming, fun, friendly and helpful. The night we had the party for example he made sure that we put on a good spread. He turned up that day about 3pm with cooking pans and carrier bags; we helped him cook as best we could.

In real-life Kamal is a talented footballer, recovering from a ligament torn about seven months ago. Most of his family are in Saudi and are expecting him to join them for Ramadan. Today he has finally given in to the pressure and bought an air-ticket. He generously brings around his washing machine for us to use while he is away. We see a new side to Eleanor, and more significantly a new set of clothes. The washing machine is clearly much appreciated.
